My PC is dead. Makes the usual boot-up sounds the first couple of seconds then stays there with the fan running. Any ideas?

Remove the RAM (Memory Modules) and reseat them in the slots.
That is usually the problem if the fans are still working but no picture. Otherwise, it's your graphics card.
Can only be one of those two things. If you have onboard graphics as well, remove the graphic card and try the onboard.

No beeps Gert. Just the usual sounds of "something happening" (like the fan revving up and probably some checks) for the first second or 2, then nothing. It doesn´t even try to boot.
Kev, I already tried removing and reinstalling the RAM but it didn´t work. Will try with the GFX card tonight then, or I´ll also try fitting the single RAM modules, maybe one of them is gone...
Thanks so far

Do the lights come on, on the keyboard & mouse? (caplocks, etc)
Did you test your screen on another pc?

No lights Gert. The screen works (tested on my laptop). If it booted, I would hear at least the HDD reading anyway ( )

KK, when you switch it on, press DELETE key to go into the BIOS set up menu. Then check that the BIOS pick up your Hard drive, it will tell you on what SATA port it is connected. You will also see the DVD drive connected. When this is fine, then you can exit and save settings.
When not reseat the SATA plug on hard drive and motherboard as they sometimes loose connection.
Once these are all OK, the next is to check you graphics card. Most motherboards have an on-board graphics card as well. Connect your plug from monitor onto on-board connection and see if it works.
Let us know.

Kev, or Christo!!! I was not thinking as your screen is black.
Put the monitor cable in at on board graphics connector.
Or else, it can be your Power Supply.

Sounds to me like the MOBO has gone. But try onboard VGA first as Christo suggested.

Re: HOLIDAY CUP TOURING CHALLENGE BATHURST 17 DEC
Very seldom that the M/B goes. Unless it's the North Bridge, which I doubt.
As for the Bios, you don't need the H/D or DVD plugged in to start it up.
If the screen is dead but the CPU fan turns, it's the Ram or Graphics 99% of the time. Willing to bet one of them is the problem.

Then he does not have the pc speaker plugged in, cause that would have beeped for mem & GPU.
But lets see what happens when he has done his tests. Hopefully you are correct on that.

Re: HOLIDAY CUP TOURING CHALLENGE BATHURST 17 DEC
KK, sounds like your m/b is failing to post...which is the error reporting test a mobo does. Its most likely either power issues, a faulty component or the actual mobo. Remove any devices connected to the machine including any usb devices, speakers anything...all hard drives out and dvd drive out then see if you still get no post...basically just connect your screen up to the onboard graphics if you have any...remove graphics card...then you see if the mobo or power are effected.
Power supplies often take the impact when there is a issue but depending on your power, something might have effected your mobo too.
I had a similar issue caused by a power spike, killed my mobo/motherboard!

Re: HOLIDAY CUP TOURING CHALLENGE BATHURST 17 DEC
Even though the fans run, it can still be the power supply - not enough power to run the graphics card.....

Re: HOLIDAY CUP TOURING CHALLENGE BATHURST 17 DEC
Well well, two 1st places! Although there were only 6 drivers last night and with Christo having a problem, that didn't make for close racing.
Thank you anyway to the guys that took the trouble to race with us and nice to see Mike back for a while.

Re: HOLIDAY CUP TOURING CHALLENGE BATHURST 17 DEC
Good to read that kev
About my PC, I unplugged everything and started to test. As soon as I connected the gfx card, it made a steady endless beep after booting, so I´m pretty sure that´s the problem. Not sure why it didn´t beep at all 2 days ago...
By the way I don´t have an onboard gfx.
This weekend I´m leaving for Italy for the Christmas holidays and I´ll be back on Jan. 7 (with a new gfx card ). It´d have been nice to do a last race of the year yesterday, on the other hand I closed my year winning at Killarney, so...

Re: HOLIDAY CUP TOURING CHALLENGE BATHURST 17 DEC
Hello strangers
KK, I'm no stranger to mobo failures, just went through one myself about 2 months ago. Shit happens and then you have to replace. Good luck anyway.
Kevin, about last night... as you well know by now, my dear DSL line provider has managed once again to totally enrage me with another port failure at my exchange. Needless to say how pissed off I was and that's not even taking my other issue into consideration. BUT, every cloud has a silver lining and mine came in the form of a contact I now have which has solidly put me back in the driver's seat. Not only is my connection working again, he also found programmed restrictions on my line which were causing 99% of my trouble. Hopefully this is all now in the past
My other issue has also been resolved by Renato who was brilliant and thanks to your suggestion for making it a very quick turn around, unfortunately I'll only be able to check back with you guys after Christmas. I was really looking forward to Bathurst though... next time.
Have fun with the next events guys... gonna miss all of you.
