The view from behind
An extract from a backmarkers diary
From the weekend, I spent a fair amount of time learning Melbourne track, and as my team mate suggested it is indeed a track where one needs to commit into corners. I spent probarbly 10 laps driving slower than usual just to learn the track and look at break marker zones.
I did manage to do about +- 70 laps, which evidently isn’t enough to get past that pesky Kevin fella.
So on race day, work had me running around from pillar to post, and knowing my normal Mondays, I really put in the effort to ensure a 16:30 get away. But as Murphy and I are very close friends, at about 16:00 we get news that the office park is already grid locked because our onramp onto the N3 has been closed down. It took our receptionist from 16:00 to 18:30 to just get out the office park.
Needless to say, I was a stress ball, really not wanting to miss out on a race. Spent an hour paceing up and down the office, and then WHAM, boss thinks it’s a good idea to have a brain storming session seeing as we all still at the office.
We eventually got the all clear and I jumped into my car at around 18:55, and proceeded to do a hot lap on the way home. Got home gave the wife a pat on the head, the dog a kiss and stuffed my face with some food, took a whizz, washed my hands, had a smoke, took a shot of Jagermeister (for the nerves) and switched on the PC on at around 19:30.
Jumped onto the server with race setup and just wanted to warm up, not actually worring about a Qualification time at the moment just wanted to put the day in my rear view mirror.
Qualification starts, I go onto track as quick as I can wanting to get out the way of the big boys, and wham I get disconnected, really F***CK you Murphy.
Anyhow I quickly reconnected and managed a measly 1:29.555, whilst my team mate suffered from some latency issue and also subsoquently disconnected just before race, it was all down to me for race 1, up against some real flyers.
After a previous fopar with racing with Q setup, I made sure I had race setup loaded and ready to go. We hit the grid, the lights go DING DING DING DING, and we were off to turn 1, being the overly cautios guy I am, I go into turn one very slowly making sure, everyone around me is clear and free, only to get the fright of my life as someone comes past me on my left giving me the slightest of nudges, but it doesn’t matter, I’m focusing on my challenge for the race, get in front of Kevin, but alas I failed, everytime I get close enough, I loose time by going wide or doing something stupid.
In the end it was a lonely race, but enjoyable for me, as no matter what being behind the wheel having some fun on track after a long poefy day is all that counts.
By the grace of the sim racing gods and a few DNFs I managed to finish the race in 7th position, happy to have completed but a little dissapointed that I seem to be at my limit and still nowhere near even the middle of the pack.
Race 2, wife had me busy nattering during Qaulification, so I missed out, came back as the session ended, and as far as the actual race goes, the less I say the better. The one thing that boggles my mind though, is the fact that I lost the car in a BIG way on the one place I was 100% confident to go flat out! #ripconfidence
I am really over struggling with my wheel, this thing is like an ADHD kid at a gaming expo, even more so on the straights, and being behind someone almost all the time it makes me so nervous to bump or shunt someone I rather just back off and take my medicine.

Great summery Hennie.
I use the same wheel as you, so if you like, we can jump on TS when you have time and I will help you to steady the beast. Just let me know.

Melbourne Master no more...
I was lulled into a false sense of security for this one by having the fastest time in practice on LiveRacers, only to be utterly embarrassed on race day by Gert, who cunningly must have been practicing offline, and was a whole second faster! But I'll only be fooled by this once. Offline practice it is then...
Race 1: After Gert's disconnect I was lucky to be starting 2nd, and was actually keeping up fairly well, until my ISP also decided enough internet for me for one day and I was unceremoniously disconnected too.
Race 2: I got connected to my backup ISP just in time for quali. I started a genuine 2nd this time and had an OK race, with a nice dice between myself, Spanners & Gert at one point. But ultimately I made at least two mistakes that cost me a lot of time and for the 2nd half of the race I was basically on the edge all the time, doing quali laps to try and get as close to Marius as I can, so I could benefit just in case he made a mistake. But he drove flawlessly and I only managed to come to within 9 seconds. so I consider myself lucky to come away with a 2nd. At least I achieved fastest lap of the race for this one.
Well done to Marius on the double. Roll on the next one.

Really well written, Hennie. I enjoyed reading that.
And I really admire your spirit - that's what sim racing should be all about!
Keep at it; I'm sure you'll be challenging for the lead soon enough.
